Doris was born in Athens in 1896 and died in Athens in 1987. His real name was Michael Papageorgiou and he was the brother of K. Papageorgiou, publisher of the magazine “Eos”. His origin was from Dorida, from where he got his artistic nickname: Doris-Doris. He initially worked as a designer and cartoonist in various magazines of the time (1913-16).
In 1919 he left for Paris where he studied in various art studios in Paris. In 1930 he returned to Athens and was immediately recognized as an important modernist artist by all art critics. In his works of the interwar period, under the influence of M. Vlaminck and R. Dufy, he presents a style that combines expressionist and decorative elements.
He painted with a restless curved brushstroke and with intense tonal fluctuations, concentrating the light in a few parts of his composition, and leaving large areas of medium tones and shadow.
